About Epe

Brief History of Epe

Epe started out as a hunting ground known as Igbo Obo (Forest of Monkeys).  Igbo Obo was a preferred hunting ground for a group of hunters led by Uraka. In his quest to find the best hunting ground, Uraka got to Ijebu -ode and still moved southward towards the sea until he got to a place called Etita, where he decided to settle. While at Etita, Uraka saw a smoke emanating from the forest towards the lagoon, he decided to explore the source of the smoke by venturing into the forest. He discovered the source of the smoke were some fishermen named Opute, Lugbasa, Alaro and Ogunmodede. Alaro and Ogunmodede were a married couple but were childless. Both Alaro and Ogunmodede were later declared deities after their death and are worshipped in Epe as gods.  The acknowledgment of them as deities is the origin of the reference of Epe Indigenes as “Omo Epe Alaro Ogunmodede”.

Uraka moved on further into to forest away from the couple until he got to a place that had a lot of black ants. Uraka was convinced that this place was an ideal hunting location despite the fact that the place was infested with black ants which made hunting very difficult for him. Hunters are expected to be silent as they lie in wait for the animals, however, Uraka often had to rid himself of the ants and this caused noise that alerted the animals of his presence. While he was trying to get the ants off him, the animals would have escaped.  He also tried to set traps for the animals, but the ants also ate the animals that his traps managed to catch. He was always returning home empty-handed from his hunting expeditions. Yet he was convinced that the place was home to the biggest games around.

This situation of unproductive hunting became a source of worry for Uraka’s wife; Peeta.  Each time Uraka was setting out to go hunting, his wife would query him if he was still going to the Oko- Epee (Forest of Black Ants). The constant query gave rise to the place being referred to as Oko- Epee, which later was shortened to Epe.

Epe expanded steadily with people settling at Areke and others going as far as Apakeji to settle. By the 17th century, the popularity of Epe started to grow to the extent that Obaloja, one of the sons of the fifth Awujale of Ijebu- Ode moved to Epe and took the title of the Oloja of Epe

The town was relatively peaceful but had its own share of inter-tribal war. 1848 witnessed one such war, known as the Makun-Omi-Epe war. It was almost immediately after the end of Makun-Omi-Epe war that King Kosoko of Lagos sought refuge in Epe Land with over 1,500 followers after he was disposed of by the British.

Kosoko was initially denied entry into Epe until he was granted clearance by the reigning Awujale of Ijebu -Ode, King Anikilaya. Kosoko’s stay in Epe impacted the socio-economic atmosphere of the town and further increase the prominence and influence of the town in the history of Lagos.

By 1869, Kosoko was pardoned and he returned to Lagos.  Most of his followers returned to Lagos with him, however, some chose to remain in Epe. Those that choose to remain in Epe are those now referred to as Epe Eko.

The modern Epe we see today is the fishing capital of Lagos, nested comfortably between Lagos state and Ogun state. It is that location that is comfortably near to the excitement of Lekki, yet comfortably far from the stress of it.  Epe is the place to live, work, relax and invest!
